Just quarantine our house!!

Joseph started running a high fever (104) on Sat night (Apr 5th). I could only get it down to 101 with Tylenol/Motrin and a lukewarm bath. By Monday he still had the high fever with no other symptoms so I took him to his pediatrician. The Dr thought it was a virus, but did some blood work any way just to make sure it wasn't something more serious. I got a phone call from the Dr Tues morning because the blood work showed there might be more going on than just a virus. I took Joseph in and they repeated the blood work. His White Blood Cell Count was even higher (36) and he had some other values that weren't normal. He was also still running the high fever so Joseph got admitted to the hospital.

I got pretty frustrated shortly after he was admitted. We got there at about 5:30pm and his Temp was 102.6. By 7pm they still didn't have any orders, and nothing had been done for Joseph. I had them retake his Temp and by now it was over 104! Since they didn't have any doctors orders for Tylenol or Motrin they brought me in some cool wet rags to try to get his temp down. By now I was very upset (since I knew the Dr was in the hospital) and told them they had better get some Tylenol now or I was taking my baby somewhere else. The nurse went out and came back with some Tylenol (amazingly enough), but Joseph was so sick by this point that he threw up right after they gave him the medicine. The nurse left again and came back in around 7:30pm with a Tylenol suppository and his temp finally started to go down.

They tested him for just about everything you can think of that night, (strep, pneumonia, flu, UTI, Meningitis, Mono, Leukemia, etc) but were never able to figure out what he had. He was started on IV antibiotics Early Wed morning once all the testing was done and after that his fever finally broke. He spent 3 nights in the hospital and was released late Friday afternoon. He is fine now so I guess we'll never know what he had.

Oh, on a side note, Elizabeth came down with Strep Throat last night (I know she didn't get it from Joseph since they tested him for that). I think we should just put a quarantine sign on our front door!!

Wow. That does not sound like fun. Good for you for sticking up for your baby! I hope it's all gone and won't be a problem again!

WAY TO GO! I'm glad that you stood up for what you knew was right! I hate that he was SO sick! I'm glad that he is better, but I know it must be frustrating not to know wht was wrong with him! I hope your household gets better soon!
